The 29th King Mango Strut Sunday, December 26 at 2pm in Coconut Grove

WARNING: THIS PARADE CONTAINS NUTS!

Join King Mango and his merry band of MangoHeads at the ultimate Tea party rally on Sunday, December 26th.  Our theme this year is Restoring Humor.

At 2pm, be there to witness the ceremonial banana dropping and the official start of the satirical parade to disperse gallons of oily jokes, slick skits and plumes of environmentally-challenged laughter into the pristine streets of downtown Coconut Grove.  There’s no containment dome, top hat, or blow-out preventers for this all-day gusher of GLEE that is guaranteed to last a long, long time.

The Forge, an icon on Miami Beach was his home for eleven years, one of the longest running shows in South Florida. He has performed at the Seminole Hardrock Casino & Hotel in Hollywood, Florida on numerous occasions. As a singer & songwriter, his mix of Smooth Jazz, R&B and Soul has stirred deep feelings among his fans who keep coming back for more. He has performed before such stars as Don King, Rick James, Barry Gibb, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson & Prince while they were dining. Brought up in New York City, proved to be fertile ground for his music. Blind since 6 years old, he started his career at 9 on the drums, then began playing the piano at 14 with lessons from blind artist Valerie Capers. The genesis of his music career was really blessed when he was booked at such notable clubs as The Village Gate in Greenwich Village, The New Cotton Club and many after hour clubs in New York City. To his many credits, he wrote “Misty Morning” for Ollie Woodson’s album, one of the original Temptations. He played Clavinet for Super Star Bennie King for his album “Super Natural”. Ricky has played with Bette Midler, Peter Niro, Roy Ayers, Sister Sledge, and he did a commercial with Luther Vandross. Ricky was at Electric Lady Studio during the recording of many of Stevie Wonders compositions and played on Stevie Wonders Soundbook. He was also in the studio during the recording of Superstition. Today Ricky is still consulting with Stevie on the latest technology for blind musicians which they both use. One of Ricky’s favorite programs which he recently introduced to Stevie is Logic.

New King Mango commemorative Buttons

Friends of King Mango are now in the button-making business in the hopes of raising much needed funds in support of this December's King Mango Strut parade.

"I love them!" said Ana Marie Windisch of  Mayfair's Windisch Gallery,  "each one is like a miniature work of art."

A new button will come out every two weeks and cost just $2.  Each will feature a unique design taken from themes from past parades.  Images like  'After Katrina,' 'Do the Mangobama,' and "Don't Taze me, Bro!" will appear on the buttons which should sell quickly and appeal to Strut-lovers of all ages.

The first button to go on sale is based on 2010's big event, the Gulf Oil Spill.  As you can see, King Mango is happily pouring a can of BP crude over his head.

The 'Oil Spill," button is on sale now at both the Windisch Gallery at 2911 Grand Avenue in Coconut Grove and Shell Lumber at 2733 SW 27th Avenue, Miami.  A series of commemorative buttons will be available at additional Grove locations next week.

Oil Rig Explosion threatens Fla & 3 other States

Debris and oil from the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform float in the Gulf of Mexico after the rig sank April 22, 2010. The mobile offshore drilling platform was engulfed in flames after an explosion April 20. © The United States Coast Guard
The only way to prevent this sort of disaster occurring in the future is to stop the endless search for oil and gas offshore and put the planet on a more sustainable path to renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Party to Save Jimbo's Place This Sunday

Like Coral Castle and Tobacco Road, the ex-shrimper hideaway known as Jimbo's Place (Duck Lake Rd., Virginia Key) is one of those odd outcroppings of the subtropical landscape that provides an increasingly necessary contrast to Miami's million condos and strip malls.

For more than a half century, James "Jimbo" Luznar has held his place out on the northeast edge of Virginia Key, a strip of City of Miami land that he's been allowed to occupy according to a long-standing verbal deal. Yet, right now, it's uncertain whether the place will survive much longer. A few months ago, the city enacted a $5 entry fee and issued warnings about the dilapidated Bahama shacks and other junk cluttering Jimbo's yard. Then things got worse: A few trailers caught fire and the electricity was cut, leaving Jimbo's powered by generators for the past 100 days.

Be there: Sunday, April 11 from noon to 5pm

Happy Good Friday

Good Friday rituals center on the ancient Church of the Holy Sepulcher, where Christian tradition says Jesus was crucified and buried before his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

While Catholics and Orthodox Christians follow different calendars, this year their Easters coincide and the churches are commemorating Good Friday together.

Happy Passover- Festival of Freedom

Pesach (Passover): March 29 - April 6, 2010

Happy Passover

The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan. It commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. And, by following the rituals of Passover, we have the ability to relive and experience the true freedom that our ancestors gained
